There are currently 28 Emmaus communities across the UK, supporting more than 700 ‘companions’ (formerly homeless people) in the UK. Companions can stay in the community for as long as they need to. Some stay for only a few months in order to get themselves back on their feet before returning to independent living, but for others Emmaus will become their permanent home.
Companions living in Emmaus communities sign off all benefits with the exception of housing benefit, which is used to help support the community. The rest of the funding that is needed is generated through social enterprise and fundraising. Emmaus communities deliver a significant return on investment. Research shows that for every £1 invested in a community, there is an £11 return, with savings to the benefits bill, health services and a reduction in crime reoffending.
1. Shop: Two shops in Hinckley, raising funds for Emmaus: La Boutique offers a large range of new and pre-loved fashion and vintage. The Emporium is a huge treasure trove packed with high quality furniture and household goods.
2. Donate items: The charity depends on donations of good quality second-hand items to sell in their shops. They can collect larger items from your home or business or you can drop them off.
3. Volunteer: Volunteering with Emmaus can be a great way to gain work experience or just get involved in a vibrant and bustling community.
